Dec 3 John Herdman Steps Down As Manager Of Toronto FC

Article image:Dec 3 John Herdman Steps Down As Manager Of Toronto FC

John Herdman has stepped down as Manager of Toronto FC after only one season in charge of the club. With more and more information coming out about the Canadian soccer drone scandal, Herdman has decided on his own to step down from his role at Toronto.

The former Men’s and Women’s Canada National Team Manager leaves Toronto FC after only being hired by the club in October of 2023. In 47 games in charge of Toronto FC, Herdman finishes with a record of 17 wins, 4 draws, and 26 losses. It did not go well in 2024 for Herdman and Toronto FC as they failed to make the MLS postseason.

Clearly things were not going well for Herdman at Toronto and some of his past is potentially starting to catch-up as well. I think that the departure of Herdman is only going to be a positive as the club tries to progress back into success on the field. Not to get too lazy here, I stated this on the Vanni Sartini article I posted not too long ago, but in terms of where Toronto can turn to next… you can always count on the MLS familiar names like Jim Curtin, Josh Wolff, Luchi Gonzalez, Robin Fraser, Gonzalo Pineda, Gary Smith, Gio Savarese, Bradley Carnell, and Adrian Heath. There are also some Interim Managers from last season that you feel like deserve a chance at a full time Manager role; Peter Luccin and Rob Valentino. However, my eyes are staying in Canada and are looking at current Forge FC Manager Bobby Smyrniotis. The 45 year old Canadian has created a dominant club within the Canadian Premier League, playing such a fun style of soccer over the last few years. Smyrniotis has led Forge FC to four Canadian Premier League titles along with two Canadian Premier League Regular Season titles.

Toronto FC is a huge market, a successful club in the history of Major League Soccer, and a club that clearly can attract big time starts to it. This team needs to reset, needs to regroup, and from the top down internally figure out what the hell they are doing! Who is the person calling the shots from a soccer point of view, who is the team under that person, then you can determine who the Manager will be. This club has to get things together a bit because if they don’t a theme of bad seasons could continue for quite a while.
