Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has been charged by the Football Association (FA) after allegedly using abusive and/or insulting language towards a match official.

Smith reacted angrily to Manchester City taking the lead in Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat, after Rodri came from an offside position to tackle Tyrone Mings and later assist Bernardo.

The 49-year-old was initially booked for asking the fourth official if he got ‘juggling balls for Christmas’ – implying he was a clown.

He was later sent off for another sarcastic remark to referee Jon Moss.

The charge could result in up to a two-match touchline ban if evidence of abusive or insulting language is found.

Smith has until Tuesday to respond.
