Frenkie de Jong’s season has been hampered by ankle injuries and it looks like he has suffered another one after being stretchered off in Barcelona’s clash with Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old had just come back from his second ankle-related absence, which has seen him miss a combined three months of this campaign, but was forced off after a tough 50-50 with Real’s Federico Valverde.

He was visibly upset as he was carried way to the applause of everyone in the stadium.

It is a big blow for Barça in their quest to win at the Bernabeu and reignite the La Liga title race, but also for the Netherlands and manager Ronald Koeman ahead of the European Championships.

The former Ajax midfielder has long been a key man for his country and was set to be again this summer as the Dutch look to repeat their 1988 success on German soil.

Hopefully for de Jong and all involved, the injury is not too severe and he is back on the pitch in the coming weeks.
