De Gea set for showdown talks with Ten Hag about United future

David de Gea seems to face an uncertain future at Manchester United.

I think most fans can see that the Spaniard isn’t the perfect fit for Erik ten Hag’s preferred style of football, which is why he decided to go more direct in recent matches. Instead of playing out from the back and stepping away from his comfort zone, De Gea has been permitted to play the ball long if necessary.

The 31-year-old has been the number one choice goalkeeper at United since 2011 and it may take time to find an adequate replacement, but it needs to be somebody who has good distribution and willingness to step off his line.

The Daily Star now claims that De Gea is planning to talk with United manager Ten Hag about his future, with the club believed to be unsure about triggering a 12-month extension in his contract.

It is suggested that De Gea wishes to seek out whether he is in Ten Hag’s long-term plans.

De Gea has had a mixed start to the new season after conceding six goals in the opening two games. Four of those came against Brentford.

However, there is even more talk about De Gea’s form now that his contact is set to expire in the summer. Reports in Spain suggest Atletico Madrid could re-sign him with Jan Oblak moving in the opposite direction.

Speaking about the latest rumours linking the player with a move away from Manchester, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano wrote in his Caught Offside newsletter: “Manchester United will decide on new contracts in the next months before January – nothing has been decided yet.

“For sure, the David de Gea situation has to be clarified, but I’m told on both player and club side there’s still no decision.”
