Steven Gerrard was an extraordinary footballer.

The Englishman established himself as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation during a glittering 18-year professional career.

The Liverpool legend was a fantastic player himself but which midfielders does he think are the best in the world right now?

Gerrard recently sat down with Rio Ferdinand for an interview on his YouTube channel, where he was asked to name his top centre midfielders in the world right now.

He gave six names in no particular order, and refused to name any of his Aston Villa players. You can view his answers below…

Jude Bellingham

“I love Jude Bellingham. Absolutely loving him.”

Kevin De Bruyne

“Without a shadow of doubt. If I had to pick one of them, Kevin De Bruyne is an absolute specialist midfielder. I see bits of all the top midfielders I played against in him. I think he’s a combination of them all. I think he’s top.”

Mason Mount

“I love what he’s doing.”

Mateo Kovacic, Fabinho, Rodri

“Kovacic at Chelsea. I love Fabinho at Liverpool, and I love Rodri.”

Gerrard predominantly picked players from the Premier League, with the only exception being Bellingham. Among the names that Gerrard missed out include Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Thiago, Joshua Kimmich and N’Golo Kante.

Ferdinand also asked Gerrard his thoughts on the eternal Gerrard vs Paul Scholes vs Frank Lampard debate.

Gerrard replied: “All very different. I don’t really like speaking about myself. Lamps was ruthless in terms of numbers, arriving in the box. Top. But in terms of controlling a game and a natural top footballer, I’ll go with Scholes. They are very different, both top in different ways.

“To be spoken about in the same breath as both of them, I’ll take that. That’s good enough for me.”
