City’s fierce some duo Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland have been shortlisted for the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award following our Champions League triumph.
They are nominated alongside World Cup winner Lionel Messi for his contributions during his tenure at Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Inter Miami this summer.
De Bruyne made 10 appearances in the European competition, scoring two goals and assisting seven in our route to lifting the Champions League trophy for the first time in the Club’s history.
He was phenomenal in City’s midfield, spurring on his team mates with his innovative passing and determination to win.
It was this attitude that earned him four Player of the Match awards during the 2022/23 campaign.
It comes as no surprise that his fellow sky blue Haaland is also named on the shortlist, having taken the Premier League by storm in his debut season in the English top-flight.
But that’s not the only place where he stole the spotlight. On the European stage, he made 11 appearances, scored 12 goals and assisted one.
He defied the laws of gravity as he scored against his former club Borussia Dortmund with a high-flying kick in the group stages.
And he became not only the youngest but the quickest player to net 35 Champions League goals – five of which he scored in our 7-0 win over RB Leipzig in the Round of 16.
The winner of the award will be announced at the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League group stage draw ceremony, which will take place on Thursday 31 August.
If De Bruyne or Haaland are victorious, they would become the first City player to receive the prestigious award.
Everyone at City would like to send their congratulations to Kevin and Erling on being shortlisted for the award.
