DC United have announced a mutual parting of ways with goalkeeper Rafael Romo, effective immediately.

The 32-year-old Venezuelan arrived in April 2022 from Oud-Heverlee Leuven in the Belgian top flight, on a deal due to run through the 2023 MLS season with a club option on an extra year.

However, his stay at Audi Field has come to a premature end, with DC United releasing a short statement confirming Romo is departing. The club offered no further explanation as to why the decision has been taken.

Romo leaves having made 15 appearances for DC United across all competitions, conceding 36 goals and keeping two clean sheets. He was one of four goalkeepers to play for the club last year alongside David Ochoa, Jon Kempin, and Bill Hamid, though none of the four now remain at the club.

Instead, DC United have signed experienced free agents Tyler Miller and Alex Bono, alongside Luis Zamudio from USL Championship affiliate Loudoun United.

Wayne Rooney will be looking to guide the Black and Red back into the MLS Cup Playoffs this year after finishing bottom of the overall standings in 2022, starting with their season opener at home to Toronto FC on February 25.
