Day of reckoning for Kortrijk and RWDM as Belgian Pro League relegation battle reaches its finale

Saturday will see the final game of the relegation play-offs in the Belgian Pro League with two sides battling to avoid ending up in the final automatic relegation spot. After their 1-0 win over Eupen last weekend, Kortrijk have destiny in their own hands as they sit in second place, which would see them face Deinze or Lommel in a play-off to remain in the Pro League. RWDM’s loss to Charleroi means they now occupy the final relegation spot. Eupen, after their defeat to Kortrijk, became the first side to be relegated.

Kortrijk now travel to Charleroi hoping to better whatever RWDM do against Eupen. Charleroi have been safe for a few weeks now but that did not stop them taking RWDM apart in the first half last weekend. The Brussels side will be hoping that the Zebras can do the same against Kortrijk to give them a chance. Eupen, now relegated, will host RWDM. In the end, who ends up where may well be determined by which of the sides two opponents decide to show up. Neither has anything to play for but pride now.

Should RWDM be relegated, it will be a disappointing end to their first season back in the top flight, with a lot of criticism being aimed at club President John Textor for how things have been handled this season. Should Kortrijk end up relegated, they too will also be able to point plenty of fingers at owner Vincent Tan, who has been disinterested in the side this season as he looks to sell them. It would also end a run of 16 straight years in the top flight.
