Netherlands midfielder Davy Klaassen has praised Germany’s national team over their protest just before they kicked off their match against Japan in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, VI reports.
The DFB team photo featured all the players covering their mouths with their hands, which is thought to be in protest of FIFA’s ruling to stop captains of national football teams to wear the “One Love” armband instead of FIFA’s own branded versions during the tournament.
Despite many national governing bodies insisting they will wear the armbands, FIFA retaliated stating any player who is wearing the “One Love” armband will be issued with a yellow card which resulted in all European countries backing down.
The gesture from the Germans was seen worldwide shortly before their 2-1 defeat to Japan in their Group E opener with many people praising the stance including 29-year-old central midfielder.
“I thought it was a beautiful expression by Germany,” Klaassen responded at a press event of the Dutch national team on Wednesday. The Ajax midfielder did not rule out the possibility of the Oranje also coming up with an alternative action.
“Of course you think about making a statement as a group as well,” the Ajax player added.
