Canada stormed into an early lead against 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia as Alphonso Davies scored his nation’s first ever goal in the tournament.
The Bayern Munich defender squandered a fantastic chance to make history against Belgium as Thibaut Courtois saved his 11th minute penalty but the 22-year-old only needed 68 seconds against Croatia to make amends.
Following a long clearance by Milan Borjan the ball was worked wide to Club Brugge winger Tajon Buchanan on the right-hand side.
The 23-year-old took one touch before whipping in a delightful cross that was met by Davies at the back post, marking a massive moment in football history for Canada.
A talismanic figure in Canadian football already, Davies has cemented his name in history by scoring Canada’s first World Cup goal – the fastest in the competition so far this year.
