Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper was keen to show his gratitude to the club’s supporters following their FA Cup fourth round replay exit away at Fleetwood Town last night.
The two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough in the fourth round late last month, but in the replay last night, it was to be the home side, Fleetwood, who ran out on top.
Indeed, Scott Brown’s side edged the tie 1-0 thanks to a 60th minute strike from Carlos Mendes Gomes.
Fleetwood can now look forward to a very stiff test in the fifth round, with the club due to travel to face Championship league leaders Burnley on March 1st.
Despite the disappointing result for Wednesday, though, David Stockdale was keen to get on social media right away and thank the supporters who made the trip to Highbury Stadium on a Tuesday night.
Indeed, on Instagram, Stockdale wrote: “Tough night last night.”
“Big thank you to all that supported and took time and money to be there.
“Great honour for me to even put that armband on for this club @swfcofficial.”
Last night was no doubt a disappointing result for Sheffield Wednesday.
They won’t have taken Fleetwood lightly, especially after drawing the first clash, but, having knocked out Premier League opposition in Newcastle in the third round, they will surely be gutted to go out to a side who play at their level.
Nevertheless, it could be a blessing in disguise.
Realistically, the Owls were not going to win the whole tournament, and as fun as a cup run would be, their exit allows them to put full focus on League One promotion, which is no doubt their priority this season.
