Arsenal’s pursuit of midfield reinforcements takes an intriguing turn with journalist David Ornstein reporting their renewed interest in Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes.

This isn’t the first time the Brazilian has been linked with the Gunners, suggesting a longstanding attraction that could culminate in a major summer transfer.

Arsenal‘s search for midfield reinforcements could lead them to a familiar target: Newcastle United‘s star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

According to David Ornstein, speaking on The Athletic’s podcast, the Gunners “really like” Bruno.

Why Guimaraes?

Mikel Arteta is reportedly seeking a new central midfielder to address the problems with the likes of Thomas Partey, who has faced persistent fitness issues. While players like Douglas Luiz, Amadou Onana, and Martin Zubimendi have been linked, Guimaraes now emerges as another option.

Ornstein explains that the reason Arsenal “really like” Bruno is due to his versatility. The 26-year-old can play as both a deep-lying playmaker and a box-to-box midfielder, offering Arteta the tactical flexibility he craves.

While Newcastle understandably want to retain their star player, a release clause in Bruno’s contract could make a move possible. Ornstein suggests that could be triggered, although it’s reportedly a hefty £100 million.

Proven Premier League quality

Unlike some transfer targets, Bruno’s Premier League credentials are undeniable. His impressive performances since joining Newcastle make him a low-risk, high-impact signing for Arsenal, capable of delivering straight away, something Ornstein says he would have to do.

Longstanding interest

Interestingly, Arsenal’s interest in Guimaraes isn’t new. Reports from January 2020 reveal the Gunners were already scouting the then 22-year-old during his time at Club Athletico Paranaense.

However, work permit issues seem to have complicated a move at the time.

The right fit for Arteta’s system

Guimaraes’ playing style aligns perfectly with Arteta’s vision. His technical ability, passing range, and tactical intelligence would greatly benefit Arsenal’s midfield. Should the Gunners succeed in signing the Brazilian, he would undoubtedly be a key asset in their quest for silverware.
