David Moyes has revealed just how close Manchester United came to signing Toni Kroos during his time as manager at Old Trafford.

The Scot’s time at United seemed doomed to failure after he attempted to lure a number of high-profile midfielders to the club, only to see Marouane Fellaini become the sole new arrival during the summer of 2013.

It was the worst possible start to the post-Ferguson era but Moyes has lifted the lid on just how close, and how different, things could have been had Kroos decided to sign from Bayern Munich.

“Toni Kroos had agreed to come Manchester United with me,” Moyes told talkSPORT.

“I met him and his wife and we agreed it all when he was at Bayern Munich.”

The Germany international eventually decided to join Real Madrid and would go on to win three Champions League titles and a LaLiga trophy.

Moyes meanwhile last just 10 months but believes he should have been given far more time.

“To go to a club like Manchester United and follow someone like Sir Alex after the time he had been there, to stay for ten months …,” the Scot added.

“It couldn’t be a revolution at Manchester United, it had to be evolution. It had to take time.

“I still think they’re having difficult times at the moment.”
