Marseille have been wooing David Luiz heavily this summer with manager Jorge Sampaoli supposedly phoning him daily to get him to sign for Marseille.

Sampaoli was also expected to travel to Brazil to meet up with the 35-year-old to present the club’s proposal, including details about a social project to help underprivileged children. Rennes also became interested recently and made contact.

Sampaoli’s persistence, however, seemed to have worked and Luiz looked to be heading to Ligue 1 with Marseille, who saw him as a leader, both on and off the field. According to a report in France, a two-year deal was agreed that would start when his Arsenal contract finally expired on 30 June.

By the end of the summer, it looked like Marseille could well have Luiz, Francis Coquelin, Stephy Mavididi, Matteo Guendouzi and William Saliba in their ranks.

Then Luiz had a meeting with Marseille’s president, Pablo Longoria.

Now, it seems like Luiz has agreed a two-year deal with Adana Demirspor instead, who boast among their ranks Mario Balotelli (30), Younes Belhanda (31), and Gohkan Inler (37).

Sport.fr report that following that meeting, Marseille decided to go with a back three of Leonardo Balerdi, William Saliba and Luan Peres.

Adana Demirspor were promoted to the Super Lig last season when they won the promotion play-offs.
