David Luiz has stated that he wants to end his career at Benfica, opening the door to a possible move when his contract at Arsenal expires.

David Luiz was a late addition to the Arsenal squad last summer, moving from Chelsea for a fee just under £8m, and signing a one-year deal with an option for a second.

Now 33, it seems unlikely a new contract will be forthcoming from Arsenal, especially when you consider his wages on top of his age.

It also doesn’t seem like Arsenal are trying to move him on this summer so a free move next summer seems the logical conclusion.

“I always said that I would like to end my career at Benfica,” Luiz told reporters.

“In football everything changes – what is true today, tomorrow is a lie – but my feeling is not.

“I love Benfica. My dream is to step on the pitch of Estadio da Light in their colours. Benfica is bigger than any player.”

All that being said, at the end of April, The Athletic were reporting that Luiz wanted to add another year on to his current Arsenal deal, although this could simply be the additional year that was in his original deal when he joined.
