Arsenal defender David Luiz could be set for a surprise early departure with his contract expiring this summer – as opposed to next.
It was widely reported that Luiz signed a two-year deal after joining the club last year, replacing outgoing captain Laurent Koscielny.
However, according to Sky Sports, the 33-year-old only signed a one-year deal with Arsenal holding an option to extend his stay for a further year.
After a difficult start in North London, Luiz improved significantly under new manager Mikel Arteta and is hugely popular within the squad.
But Arsenal are struggling financially after failing to secure Champions League football for the last three seasons, in addition to the recent COVID-19 outbreak.
With Sokratis, Shkodran Mustafi, Calum Chambers and Rob Holding already at the club – plus William Saliba returning from loan – letting Luiz leave becomes understandable.
The veteran defender is apparently keen to stay at Arsenal and has told friends he wants to remain in London.
