David James suggests Liverpool could afford to sell star forward

Former Liverpool and England goalkeeper David James has suggested that the club could afford to cash in on Mo Salah if the right offer came in.

James says that any player is going to be sol for the right price, but says that it would make sense if Liverpool sold Salah to a foreign team – rather than a club such as Manchester City.

He claims that Liverpool are not dependent on Salah and that means that he is not indispensable, allowing the club to sell him if a substantial bid came in.

“If the price is right, any player is going to be sold. It depends what that price is. It’s a difficult argument because you have got a player who consistently scores goals, and that’s what every team wants.

“If you look at Man City with Sergio Aguero, it is like the dependency is on one player. If Salah went to Man City, I don’t think that would be good business for Liverpool. If he went to a different league and a different country, it would make more sense.

“I don’t think Liverpool are dependent on Salah and that’s a good thing for Jurgen Klopp. However, he would still need replacing. Who do you replace him with? [Diogo] Jota, Mane and Firmino aren’t going to play in every game, [Divock] Origi has been left by the wayside and isn’t going to fit that gap for Salah.

“I don’t think he’s indispensable.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

It is worth mentioning that James is not saying Liverpool should sell Salah, but rather they could if the right situation came about. He is saying that Liverpool could cope without him and, to be fair, he was proven right against Leicester on Sunday. Salah was absent from the squad due to Covid-19 restrictions and Liverpool put in a sublime performance as they leapfrogged Leicester in the table with a 3-0 win. Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino were on the scoresheet, after Jonny Evans’ own goal gave them the lead in the first half.

Selling Salah seems unlikely to be something Liverpool are currently thinking about, though, giving his terrific form this season for the Reds. He has eight goals in eight Premier League matches, along with two goals in two starts in the Champions League. The forward has been a star in Liverpool’s team since he joined the club, with an incredible 104 goals and 42 assists in 165 competitive games for the Reds – showcasing just how good he has been.

So, Salah may not be irreplaceable but he is a very effective forward and has been producing at a superb rate throughout his Liverpool career. If a huge offer comes in, Liverpool may – as James says – consider it, but this is completely hypothetical at the moment.
