Liverpool’s summer has been characterised by ambition and authority, with more than £200 million already committed to reshaping Arne Slot’s title-winning squad. Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz have arrived to add guile and thrust in the final third, and now the Reds are reportedly eyeing Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker looks increasingly open to a move away from Newcastle, and Anfield has emerged as his most likely destination.
This recruitment drive has bolstered an already potent forward line including Mohamed Salah, reinforcing the belief that Liverpool will continue to overpower opponents through attacking flair. For now, the emphasis is not on defenders, but on goals and control.

While concerns over the defensive unit have surfaced following the departure of Jarell Quansah and growing uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate’s contract, former Reds goalkeeper David James believes Liverpool are right not to rush.
James said: “You’d think their offence will always be better than the opposition’s defence and they will be able to out-score other teams except for the occasional game.”
His view reflects the confidence surrounding Slot’s side, who are expected to navigate the early part of the season with minimal disruption at the back. Liverpool’s defence, in James’ view, will be tested properly only in the latter stages of the Champions League, providing time for adjustments if required.
Marc Guehi has emerged as a target, with the Crystal Palace captain’s contract entering its final year. Fresh from lifting the FA Cup, Guehi is yet to extend his stay at Selhurst Park and could become a free agent next summer. Liverpool’s interest has intensified as they monitor both long-term options and short-term depth.
James added: “The idea Liverpool have to have the best defence would be wonderful, but I don’t think they have to rush into buying someone. It might be something that happens in January. The end of the Champions League campaign is naturally when you come up against better teams and your defensive issues can be called into question.”
Virgil van Dijk remains a colossal figure in Liverpool’s defence, recently penning a new deal and continuing to lead from the back. However, Joe Gomez has once again been sidelined after leaving the club’s pre-season camp with another injury setback.
Despite these concerns, James is optimistic: “I imagine they will have so much success anyway they won’t feel they have to desperately go out and buy someone and looking at the signings there doesn’t appear to be any desperation so far.”
With the window still open, Slot and his staff may revisit defensive options in January. For now, Liverpool are placing trust in their firepower, leadership, and the philosophy that delivered the Premier League crown last season.
