David: 'I learn from Burak Yilmaz every day' | OneFootball

Jonathan David acknowledged he learns from Burak Yilmaz "day after day" following his teammate's matchwinning display against Lens that inched Lille closer to the Ligue 1 Uber Eats title.

Only the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more league goals than Yilmaz among players aged 35 or over across Europe's top five championships with the Turkey international taking his season's tally to 15 with his brace in Friday's 3-0 derby win.

David struck his team's third against their northern rivals to move onto 12 for the campaign, and the Canada international paid tribute to his strike partner, who is also in his first season in France.

"We can say he's an elder player, he's 35 after all, but with is experience, he's calm, he gives advice, he's strong with his back to play and in the air," said the 21-year-old, 14 years Yilmaz's junior.

"He links up well, he knows how to score, right foot, left foot…I learn from him day after day."

The victory — Lille's 13th away from home this season, a continent-best level with AC Milan and Manchester City in Europe's top five leagues — means Christophe Galtier's men are at least assured of keeping the one-point advantage they had over second-placed Paris Saint-Germain coming into the weekend.

The reigning French champions wrap up Round 36 at Rennes on Sunday knowing a slip in Brittany will hand Lille the chance to potentially claim the club's fifth top-flight title at home to Saint-Etienne next weekend.

Even so, victory against Les Verts and then at Angers on the final day of the season will preserve top spot for Galtier's squad regardless of what PSG do.

In the first half of the season, however, Lille took just a point from the two opponents they still have to face meaning David is trying to keep a lid on expectations.

"Of course, after this win, we're getting closer to the title. We have two matches left and we've taken a big step," said David, whose side have lost only to Angers and struggling Nîmes since the turn of the year.

"The hardest bit is to come, every game is difficult. We have dropped points in games in which we were the favourites this season. We'll have to stay focussed right to the end.

"We talk a lot among ourselves before games to keep focussed, clear-headed and calm. If we get too carried away, anything can happen."
