Lille went ahead at the Stade de la Meinau from the penalty spot four minutes before half-time, with David converting after Maxime Le Marchand fouled Ismaily in the area. It was a second successful spot-kick in as many games for David, who netted the only goal of the game in last week’s derby against RC Lens from a penalty.

This time LOSC added further goals in the second half, with Timothy Weah playing a key role after coming off the bench. It was 2-0 in the 76th minute as Strasbourg failed to clear their lines before David converted a low ball driven into the box from the right by Weah.

The United States international was the provider again as Lille wrapped up a convincing win with 10 minutes to play. This time he teed up Rémy Cabella to score with a clinical first-time finish to make it 3-0.

Paulo Fonseca’s side have back-to-back victories for the first time this season, not to mention a second successive clean sheet. This result lifts them up to within two points of northern neighbours Lens in fourth, albeit before the rest of the weekend’s action. Meanwhile Strasbourg risk dropping back into the bottom four over the course of the weekend after failing to build on their first victory of the season, recorded last time out against Angers SCO.

THE PLAYER: Jonathan David

The Canadian striker is in fine form and is now the division’s leading scorer with nine goals to his name already. He has scored five times in Lille’s last four outings, and on current form he should comfortably better his tally of 15 Ligue 1 Uber Eats goals from the last campaign.

THE STAT: 6

Strasbourg have failed to win any of their first six home games of a top-flight campaign for the fourth time in their history. The last time was in 2005-06. Also, Fonseca has now won six of his first 11 games in charge of Lille. Only René Girard (7) has done better among LOSC coaches going back over 75 years of top-flight football.
