Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea feels he doesn’t get the same “respect and admiration” in Spain as he does in England.

De Gea played the full 90 minutes as Spain thrashed Argentina 6-1 in Madrid on Tuesday evening and even notched up an assist when his long kick downfield was latched onto by Iago Aspas for his side’s fifth goal of the night.

The former Atlético man has matured into one of the finest shot-stoppers on the planet during his seven years at Old Trafford and is persistently linked with a return to La Liga with Real Madrid.

But the 27-year-old has suggested he feels more loved in England than he does in his homeland and is happy to stay where he is, for the time being at least.

“In England I have a great affection and respect that I do not notice so much here,” said De Gea, as reported by Goal.

“But every time I come to the national team I feel fondness inside, and it is the most important thing.”

De Gea came close to completing a switch to the Bernabéu in the summer of 2015, only for the move to break down at the eleventh hour due to an administrative error.

His current deal with United runs until 2019, with the option to extend for a further year.
