A proposed move to Genoa for ex-Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has reportedly collapsed, leaving the player’s future in further limbo.
De Gea has been without a club since parting ways with United in July last year, after 12 years of loyal service.
At Old Trafford, the Spaniard made 545 appearances and won eight trophies in the process.
It’s believed that De Gea has not been short of interest or overtures but he has so far turned most of them down. This is because he’s only keen on the right opportunity.
A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that he was considering retirement in case he won’t become the No. 1 goalkeeper at a top club in Europe.
More recently, it emerged that Serie A outfit Genoa made an approach to sign the 33-year-old free agent.
It was stated that De Gea was presented with Genoa’s project and what his role would be in the team – an offer he was strongly considering.
The report mentioned that Genoa boss Alberto Gilardino considers De Gea a good fit for his plans heading into the 2024/25 season.
However, according to Sky Sports, the deal has fallen through and a switch to the Luigi Ferraris Stadium is no longer on the table.
Sky reveal, “We understand that a deal to take David de Gea to Genoa in Serie A is off.
It’s thought that unrealistic salary expectations means that Genoa are now unlikely to pursue a deal and they will instead focus on alternative targets.”
“De Gea was looking to go to Genoa but it’s thought that the deal is expected to be off.”
The 33-year-old’s long wait to return to football is now set to go on.
