David Datro Fofana won’t remember his Chelsea debut very fondly.

The Ivorian striker recently joined the club from Molde for a reported £10.93 million fee and was named on the bench by Graham Potter for the Blues’ trip to Manchester City in the FA Cup.

Fofana watched on as his new teammates were dismantled in a hugely one-sided first half at the Etihad.

Goals from Riyad Mahrez, Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden saw Pep Guardiola’s well-oiled machine go in at the break 3-0 ahead.

Chelsea were truly woeful in the opening 45 minutes of play, with Kai Havertz’s attempt at leading the line bordering on the laughable.

As such, Potter decided to take Havertz out the firing line for the second half and replaced him with Fofana.

Making your debut while 3-0 down to City away from home? Yeah, that right there is a baptism of fire.

To be fair to Fofana, he didn’t do much wrong in his 45 minutes of action – and can boast that Chelsea only lost 1-0 while he was on the field of play.

The 20-year-old was at least a bit of a presence up front and on top of that, he gave the suffering Blues fans one moment to enjoy during their ill-fated trip up north.

Was it a snippet of unbelievable skill? No, no it wasn’t. Instead, Fofana did something that a number of Chelsea player failed to do; showed some fight.

The striker – who scored 15 goals in 24 league matches at Molde before joining Chelsea – battled for possession near the corner flag, sending Joao Cancelo tumbling to the ground with his display of physicality.

You know things aren’t going swimmingly at Stamford Bridge when a moment like that is the pick of the bunch from a match.

Given Chelsea’s lengthy injury list and the fact so many players are out of form, there’s a small chance Fofana could make his first start for the club on Thursday away at Fulham.

The west London derby is simply a must-win fixture for Potter and the team.
