David Beckham has shared his verdict on why England’s ‘Golden Generation’ failed and it seems he has a rather different opinion on the matter to some of his former teammates.

In 2017 live on BT Sport, we witnessed A-grade television as Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand all spent 10 minutes dissecting just why that mighty England team didn’t win anything.

It’s a topic that every man and his dog had been debating across the nation for the past decade, and so to hear the reasoning from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, made for a fascinating watch.

Gerrard, Lampard and Ferdinand’s verdict

According to the star’s, the England team couldn’t put aside their heated Premier League rivalries enough to allow them to bond and achieve success.

Ferdinand summed it up brilliantly: “It was down to the obsession with winning. I didn’t want to see Frank have an edge on me. I didn’t want to speak to him about anything he’d be able to take away to facilitate his team winning.

“When I was with England with Stevie, when we were battling for the Premier League, I didn’t want to sit around him and be around him because I just didn’t want to hear about what Liverpool were doing.”

It makes a lot of sense when you watch back some of their disconnected performances on the pitch and it’s often joked that Gerrard and Lampard wouldn’t even pass to each other.

However, Beckham doesn’t agree.

What does Beckham think?

Well, according to the global icon and Three Lions legend, that had absolutely no relevance to the matter and it was just a case of not being good enough.

Speaking on Gary Neville’s podcast and YouTube series, The Overlap, Beckham said: “It’s because we weren’t good enough on the day, simple as that.

“I’ve heard numerous people come out and say, well, there was cliques and some players didn’t talk to other players.

“I don’t care if players didn’t talk whilst they were eating dinner, whilst they were eating lunch, while they’re in the changing room, the moment you get on that pitch, I don’t care if Stevie G’s in a better position than me I’m gonna give him the ball. Simple.

“You’re footballers and you’re professional. It’s not about cliques, it’s not about Liverpool players not liking United players.”

It’s a commendable opinion and one that maybe if the rest of the team had shared, England might have enjoyed more success on the international stage.

Whilst there is plenty of heat surrounding Gareth Southgate right now after England’s recent performances in the Nations League, one thing you have to credit the ex-Middlesbrough boss for is the way he has brought the current crop of England players together in recent years.

Hopefully that he can be the glue that surges England into the latter stages of the Qatar World Cup later this year, although, based on recent evidence, don’t put your house on it.
