David Alaba suffers minor setback in injury recovery

Real Madrid will not risk David Alaba against Real Betis in the club’s final La Liga game of the season on Friday night after the centre-back picked up a minor leg injury, with the plan to protect him ahead of the Champions League final.

Real have already been crowned Spanish champions for the second time in the last three years after walking the title race and could make it a particularly special year to remember if they can beat Liverpool to secure an historic 14th European title later this month.

Alaba, who has generally enjoyed a good first season with Los Blancos since his free transfer from Bayern Munich last summer, hasn’t played since being substituted at half-time in a win over Osasuna in April because of a niggling hip muscle problem.

It was expected that the Austrian would be fit to face Betis on Friday after overcoming a hip issue and returning to training, but AS reported that he was absent from training on Thursday morning due to a fresh leg setback.

There is no major concern from the club and the point is made that were Friday night’s game of greater importance then Alaba would have played anyway. But given there is nothing riding on the fixture from a Real perspective, utmost caution is being exercised to ensure that Alaba, and indeed every other player, is fully fit and in good shape to face Liverpool.

Alaba was the only player missing from Thursday’s session and Carlo Ancelotti otherwise has a fully fit squad to choose from, aiding his ability to rotate and rest. The match could even see Gareth Bale involved for what will be his final home game as a Real player.
