Darwin Nunez was on the scoresheet for Liverpool as they beat Ajax 3-0 on Wednesday night to secure their passage to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
It was the Uruguayan’s sixth goal in 13 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool.
The club-record signing is really starting to silence all of his doubters.
However, he certainly didn’t help himself after missing an open goal late in the first half.
Mohamed Salah had given Liverpool a lead in the 42nd-minute and, minutes later, they cut Ajax open with an incredible passing move. It ended with Roberto Firmino unselfishly putting the ball on a plate for Nunez to tap into an empty net.
But he somehow, SOMEHOW, managed to hit the post from point-blank range.
How did he miss!?
Nobody knows. Not least Firmino who had squared the ball perfectly to Nunez.
His shocked reaction was spotted by fans as well as BT Sport pundits Rio Ferdinand and Peter Crouch.
The Brazilian turned around in disbelief with his arms outstretched as if to say “How on earth did you miss that, Darwin!?”
On punditry duty, Crouch said: “I don’t think Firmino can understand how Liverpool aren’t 2-0 up. It’s a great move and Firmino’s pass is perfect, how Nunez misses that I don’t know.”
While Ferdinand added: ”Firmino man, his reaction is brilliant. Even Robertson’s reaction says it all, it was a beautiful team move.”
Nunez came out in the second half looking to make amends and he did just that just four minutes after the break. The striker headed home from Andy Robertson’s corner to make it 2-0 to Liverpool.
Harvey Elliott added a third a few minutes later to seal a comfortable victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
After the match, Klopp insisted Nunez had a ‘really good game’ after coming back from a muscle injury that saw him miss the loss to Nottingham Forest last weekend.
“I think even he was surprised [at the miss],” Klopp said. “He had a really good game in both directions, helped defending and played with a big heart today so hopefully we took him off early enough!”
Meanwhile, Andy Robertson revealed Nunez was ‘angry’ at half time but promised him he’d assist him in the second half.
“Darwin was really angry with himself at half time,” Robertson said. “I sat next to him at half time and told him I would put a cross in to his head for him to score.”
