Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has admitted that any potential signing this month must possess the right traits in terms of character in order to thrive at Hillsborough.

Whereas the Owls’ promotion rivals Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich Town have both added fresh faces to their respective squads during the current window, the Owls have yet to make any moves in terms of incomings.

Wednesday will be on the lookout for a new defender in the coming days after Cardiff City opted to recall Mark McGuinness from his loan spell with the League One outfit.

McGuinness excelled during his time with the Owls as he managed to help them claim 11 clean-sheets in the 17 league games that he participated in.

In the absence of the 22-year-old last weekend, the Owls managed to secure a 1-0 victory over Fleetwood Town.

Marvin Johnson scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the 17th minute of this particular fixture.

As a result of this triumph, Wednesday are now seven points clear of Ipswich in the standings.

The Owls could widen this particular gap tomorrow evening if they beat Cheltenham Town.

Ahead of this fixture, Moore has outlined the key criteria that any future Wednesday signings need to possess.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live, Moore said: “To play for Sheffield Wednesday and this passionate, expectant supporter base – not just any player can play here.

“You’ve got to be made of stern stuff and have a real sense of self-confidence.

“So when we’re recruiting players in I’ve had to look at that.

“Certainly in the early parts of my managerial career here I did see one or two possible wane under that pressure.

“That’s understandable because it’s not easy.

“Some can embrace it, some can’t handle it.

“So when recruiting a player, as good as it is to come and play down at S6 there is that expectancy, which for all of us who are here, we love.

“It’s a wonderful driver but certainly for some players that have put the shirt on at this club we’ve seen the pressure get the better of them.

“So when I’m recruiting I do have to take this into consideration.”

Darren Moore is the current manager?

The Verdict

With Moore weighing up the aforementioned factors in terms of future signings, it will be interesting to see whether he is able to recruit players that fit this criteria between now and the end of January.

Although the Owls have built a sizeable advantage over Ipswich, there is plenty of football left to be played and thus their goal in the coming weeks will be to maintain their current unbeaten run at this level.

Having secured a victory in each of their last five league games, Wednesday will be confident in their ability to cause issues for Cheltenham on Tuesday.

When you consider that the Owls sealed a comfortable 3-0 win over the Robins earlier this season, it would not be at all surprising if they prove to be too strong for their opponents again tomorrow.
