Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has revealed that Callum Paterson missed yesterday’s clash with Milton Keynes Dons due to the fact that he was at risk of picking up a suspension in this fixture.

The 27-year-old has already been shown four yellow cards this season and thus he would have been banned for the club’s meeting with Wycombe Wanderers this weekend if he picked up another booking during last night’s game.

For the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign, a player will only receive a suspension in relation to this specific rule if they accumulate 10 yellow cards in League One.

Wednesday managed to seal all three points in Paterson’s absence as they extended their current unbeaten run in the third-tier to nine games at Hillsborough.

Scott Twine opened the scoring for the visitors before Lee Gregory levelled proceedings in the 83rd minute.

Josh Windass then netted what turned out to be the winning goal in stoppage-time.

As a result of this victory, the Owls climbed up to fifth in the League One standings.

Making reference to his decision not to play Paterson yesterday, Moore admitted that he was unwilling to take a risk with the forward.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live about Paterson, Moore said: “I left him out because he was on four bookings and tonight was the cut-off point.

“I was going to put him on the bench but I just said to him that if I was going to put you on the bench then I might as well start you so it is pointless you being on the bench.

“We needed to look at him for Saturday.”

This was a wise call by Moore as Paterson could have missed this weekend’s showdown with Wycombe if he did feature against MK Dons as he may have picked up another booking in this fixture.
