Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore has admitted they will have to wait a few days to discover the full extent of Barry Bannan’s injury.

The influential Owls midfielder was forced off in the first half against Port Vale on Thursday night and whilst the side went on to record a relatively comfortable 2-0 victory, Bannan’s early exit was undoubtedly the negative point of the night.

Given his importance to the team, fans will want news quickly on their talisman but Moore told Yorkshire Live that they don’t yet know whether the setback is a serious one.

It’s too early to say with him. We’ll assess him the next couple of days.”

Those comments suggest that Bannan is highly likely to miss Wednesday’s next game, which comes in a matter of days when they take on Cambridge United on January 2.

With Ipswich Town dropping two points as they drew away at Portsmouth, only goal difference keeps Moore’s men outside of the automatic promotion places, whilst they trail leaders Plymouth Argyle by four points.

The verdict

Everyone knows how good Bannan is, so there’s no getting away from the fact that if he is out for a lengthy period then it’s a massive blow for Wednesday.

But, it should be noted that he did pick up an injury earlier this month and missed just one game, so it’s a case of waiting and seeing how bad it is.

All connected to the club will be hoping for good news in the coming days, along with Bannan who will be desperate to get back out there to help Wednesday’s promotion push.
