Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has revealed that Mallik Wilks missed yesterday’s clash with Plymouth Argyle due to a minor issue with his hamstring.

Wilks could potentially make his return to action on Saturday when the Owls face Cheltenham Town at Hillsborough.

In the absence of the 23-year-old, Wednesday suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Plymouth last night.

Argyle opened the scoring in the third minute of this fixture as Ryan Hardie fired an effort past Wednesday goalkeeper David Stockdale.

The Owls then levelled proceedings via an effort from Liam Palmer.

Following the break, Michael Smith had an effort saved by goalkeeper Michael Cooper before Josh Windass’ strike hit the post.

After Cooper denied Palmer, Plymouth scored what turned out to be the winning goal in stoppage-time as Sam Cosgrove headed home from Niall Ennis’ cross.

As a result of this defeat, Wednesday missed out on the opportunity to move above Argyle in the League One standings.

Making reference to Wilks in the aftermath of this fixture, Moore admitted that wasn’t willing to take a risk on the winger at Home Park.

Speaking to The Star, Moore said: “From the game on Saturday he was really sore in his hamstring area, so we just didn’t take the risk.

“He trained yesterday, but didn’t complete the training session – so with that in mind we couldn’t risk him.

“Hopefully by not risking him he’ll be ok for Saturday.”

The Verdict

Whereas Wednesday would have been hoping to turn to Wilks for inspiration yesterday, he could have potentially suffered a significant injury setback against Plymouth.

By avoiding taking risk on Wilks, the Owls may now be able to call upon his services this weekend.

If the winger is fit enough to feature against Cheltenham, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if he delivers an eye-catching display for Wednesday in this fixture.

In the four league games that he has participated in this season, Wilks has provided two direct goal contributions and will be keen to add to this tally on a regular basis over the course of the coming months.
