Time is running out for Boca Juniors to decide whether to include Darío Benedetto in their squad for the next round of the Copa Libertadores.
The forward’s right knee injury, which kept him out of the World Cup contention for the albiceleste, also prevented him from participating in the group stage of the international cup competition.
He suffered a season-ending injury in November 2017 when he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in a match against Racing Club. At the time, Benedetto was the Superliga’s leading goal-scorer and had recently helped Argentina in their World Cup Qualifiers.
Conmebol rejected lobbying efforts by the Xeneizes to add another roster spot ahead of their match ups with Club Libertad of Paraguay. Boca now have a little over three weeks to determine if Benedetto can fully recover from Achilles tendinitis in his left leg ahead of the return fixture on 30 August.
Manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto currently has four forwards named to his squad: Carlos Izquierdoz, Mauro Zárate, Sebastián Villa, and Esteban Andrada. If Benedetto is not deemed fit, recent signing Lucas Olaza could benefit from the opportunity to join the squad in international competition.
Benedetto has not played since injuring his right knee on 19 November 2017.
