Dante (40) has defended Khéphren Thruam’s (22) drop in performances this season for OGC Nice but urges the midfielder to improve as the club look to consolidate their Champions League position.

Despite Le Gym’s impressive season where they looked like early title challengers alongside Paris Saint-Germain, Thuram has had a poor season where the midfielder has looked a far cry from the intensely gifted presence that has come to be expected.

Thuram has struggled to adjust to summer appointment Francesco Farioli’s new system and as a result, the midfielder’s influence within the side has begun to wane. Thuram has yet to score or assist his teammates this season and has looked bereft of the creativity that often defined games for Nice since he burst onto the scene in 2019.

However, as Dante has explained, “We’ve gotten used to him playing great matches that when he is a step below we see it. He’s had injuries, and lost his rhythm a little, he needs time. He’s still a young player but we need him.”

The club are yet to win in February and have slipped out of the title race and from their perch in second place, and Dante believes that Thuram will be vital to the club turning this mini-troubled patch around, and securing a late-season push for the Champions League.

The club captain continues, “He must regain his athletic level above all. But for him to be better, we all have to help him in aggressiveness and technical accuracy so that he can show more of his qualities.”
