Rohl has been the mostly strongly linked person with the vacant Saints job.

Southampton are confident that they can get Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl to become their next manager, following the sacking of Russell Martin.

This latest report has come from TEAMtalk, who added that the German, who previously worked for the Saints as an assistant under Ralph Hassenhuttl, is open to taking the job.

Quickly after Martin was let go, attention turned to Hillsborough.

It only made sense for Southampton, who currently sit bottom of the Premier League table on five points from 16 games, to look at the Championship's best options, which Rohl certainly is. Carlos Corberan has also been reportedly eyed by the Saints.

The 35-year-old German has taken the Owls from a near guarantee to be relegated when he arrived near the start of last season to one of the outside choices to finish in the top six this time around.

The buzz around this potential move has only grown as the days have gone on since Sunday evening, when the Saints pulled the plug on Martin following a 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary's. This latest news will spark things even more.

Southampton confident of landing Danny Rohl

TEAMtalk have said that the Saints are confident that they will be able to convince Rohl, who they want to bring in ASAP, to come back down south to take over the first-team and try to pull off what he did last term with Wednesday.

The club have been in talks with him and his camp, as per Florian Plettenberg, and their board see Rohl as a great option for the future, as their return to the top flight looks like it will be short-lived.

Southampton's owners, Sport Republic, are said to be interested in bringing in someone with a similar ethos and philosophy to Martin, but are willing to be flexible in their search, as per Alfie House. You can see why they would think that Rohl would fit the bill.

As much as Wednesdayites may feel a sense of impending doom when it comes to their much beloved boss, there are some things that may make it tricky for the Saints to get him.

Firstly, he's not the only one in the running. The aforementioned West Brom boss is also said to be someone of interest, while Ivan Juric has also been linked with the position by TBR Football. The online outlet further stated that Southampton would rather not pay a compensation fee for their new boss, making Juric and former Denmark head Kasper Hjulmand viable options.

Southampton would have to pay a compensation fee to Wednesday for Rohl's services as he signed a new deal with the Owls in the summer; one that would likely be a hefty one, potentially around £5 million. That's according to The Star, who revealed this when Sunderland were supposedly interested in Rohl before this summer.

Danny Rohl should be wary of Southampton job

In spite of the Premier League manager status that will come with it, there's not much that's appealing about moving to St Mary's now. They appear to be spiraling out of control, heading for relegation, and Rohl could well end up back in the Championship before he knows it.

The 35-year-old, despite his relative inexperience as a manager, will probably back himself to be Southampton's lifejacket. It's such a gamble though.

There's no guarantee that Wednesday will stay in the rough position they are - not far behind the play-off spots - for the rest of the season, but they are under no threat of relegation, and if he does keep them within reach of the top six, or even get the club into it, then there will surely be better Premier League opportunities that will come his way next summer; ones with a higher prospect than going to Southampton.
