FLW rounds-up the latest news about Danny Rohl’s future at Sheffield Wednesday.
Danny Rohl’s future at Sheffield Wednesday remains up in the air as preparations begin for the 2025/26 Championship season.
The former Bayern Munich coach has done a stellar job with the Owls during his two-year spell in Yorkshire, and has understandably been linked with a move away from Hillsborough after dealing with the trials and tribulations of owner Dejphon Chansiri.
With just over eight weeks remaining until the first ball of the new campaign is kicked, Football League World rounds-up the latest news surrounding Rohl as speculation lingers on about his next move.
In an interview with the German newspaper Bild last week, Danny Rohl admitted he wants to return to the Bundesliga “as soon as possible”.
Asked when he would be returning as a head coach in the German top-flight, Rohl emphatically responded: "If it were up to me, as soon as possible.
"The Bundesliga is obviously something special because I grew up with it. For me, it's always about working at the highest level. I want to compete against the best teams, with the best coaches.
"I have the good feeling that I've been able to generate significant added value over the last 18, 19 months in a demanding league with very different playing styles."
Rohl was less forthcoming over links to RB Leipzig, adding: “I don’t want to say anything about that.”
The 36-year-old commented on interest from clubs across both England and Germany as "validation of my work", adding that "we'll see what happens in the summer."
According to a post via his X account on 5 June, talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent, Alex Crook, revealed that Middlesbrough are admirers of Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl.
Boro are searching for Michael Carrick’s successor after parting ways with the former Manchester United midfielder last week, and the Teesside club are considering a move for Rohl to lead the side forward.
Despite Middlesbrough being keen on making a swoop, Rohl's buyout clause in his contract is an issue for owner Steve Gibson to contend with.
Rohl’s release clause in his Owls contract is reportedly around £5 million, which has proved to be a stumbling block in Werder Bremen’s pursuit of the German too.
It appears now that Middlesbrough will have to move on to other targets on their shortlist, with those kinds of funds needing to be used to recruit players rather than a new boss.
With Leicester City target Russell Martin taking the job at Scottish giants Rangers, Danny Rohl is now still a candidate to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy at the King Power Stadium.
Van Nistelrooy’s future remains firmly up in the air after the conclusion of their Premier League season, with Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett reporting the former Manchester United frontman is yet to discuss his future with the Leicester City board.
As the 48-year-old spends time with his family back home in the Netherlands, it remains unclear whether he will be in charge at the King Power Stadium in the Championship.
Dorsett has also claimed that he still expects Van Nistelrooy to leave the club, touting moves for Danny Rohl, as well as former Hull City boss Liam Rosenior.
The Foxes have been slow to offer clarity about their managerial situation, but Leicester could be an appealing move for the Wednesday boss if he has ambitions of becoming a Premier League boss in the near future.
