Managing another game from the home dugout at Hillsborough isn't looking like a realistic option for Rohl.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has reportedly held talks with Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.
The feelings of the Owls' boss has been made fairly clear on a number of occasions since the end of the 2024/25 campaign. Following the first lot of missed payments to his players by owner Dejphon Chansiri, in late March, Rohl made it known that he wanted to leave Hillsborough this summer.
Since then, players, coaches and staff have been hit by another round of non-payments. They were due their May salaries on the 30th of that month: people are still yet to be paid. Now Wednesday are in the midst of an embargo and are staring down the barrel of a three-window transfer ban, giving the German even less of a reason to want to stay.
Rohl has already been linked with a number of clubs, and continues to be. Werder Bremen held "positive talks" with the 36-year-old, as per Rob Staton, but, like Southampton, the buy-out clause in his contract, which still has another two years left on it, proved to be a sticking point for them and things went no further.
This compensation fee is pretty much the only reason why Rohl is still Wednesday's boss, but it hasn't dissuaded every interested outfit. German outlet Kicker have reported that Wolfsburg have held talks with him. They were reported by the Daily Mail to be monitoring Rohl's situation and have now stepped up their prospective pursuit of him.
Wednesday's head honcho is not Wolfsburg's only option. They are also reported to be interested in the Go Ahead Eagles boss Paul Simonis. He, too, would need to be bought out of his deal with his current club.
Rohl made it plainly obvious in a recent interview with Bild, another outlet from his homeland, that he would like to go back to his roots, if possible. He said, on the prospect of him returning to Germany: "If it were up to me, as soon as possible (to leave). The Bundesliga is obviously something special because I grew up with it. For me, it’s always about working at the highest level.
"I want to compete against the best teams, with the best coaches. I have the good feeling that I’ve been able to generate significant added value over the last 18, 19 months in a demanding league with very different playing styles."
A breakaway from Hillsborough feels like the only realistic option for Rohl this summer. His skills certainly warrant a managerless team going and poaching him away from the Owls, who will be so happy that they included this weighty compensation clause in their manager's new deal last summer.
Middlesbrough reportedly have the Wednesday boss in their top three coaching candidates, alongside Steve Cooper and Rob Edwards. Again, though, the exit clause was reported to be a potential problem for Boro.
