Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has claimed that Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba would not start for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Murphy says that the defensive side of Pogba’s game is not good enough for Klopp. He claims that Klopp would not put up with his lack of effort defensively and, therefore, would not start him in his team.

Speaking on TalkSport (28/09/2020), Murphy explained why the French international would not get in the Liverpool XI.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Pogba’s credentials are incredibly impressive as a player, but Murphy makes a good point about the work Klopp asks of his midfielders. They are required to put a shift in defensively along with pressing high up the pitch consistently – so they cannot afford to switch off or react slowly in games.

The Frenchman has won the World Cup with his country and was signed by Manchester United for a – at the time – world-record transfer fee. He was also named in the 2018/19 PFA Team of the Year – showing that he has been a star at Premier League level in recent seasons.

Those statistics and achievements are irrelevant, though, if he is not able to do what Klopp would require of him at Liverpool. So, Murphy is right in saying that Pogba would need to either adapt the way he plays football or he would not play. Although, it is worth noting that there is no speculation regarding Pogba joining Liverpool and this is all just hypothetical.
