Danny Mills has given his expert analysis on Leeds United and Callum Wilson.
The former Leeds United player believing that the 33 year old could be a ‘great option’ for his old club next season.
Leeds United having got promotion and needing players capable of scoring enough goals at Premier League level, to avoid the instant relegation that all three promoted clubs (Leicester, Ipswich, Southampton) experienced last season in the top tier.
The thing is, if you are going to give ‘expert’ analysis, then you need to at least know what you are talking about, you know, things like facts.
The cunning Danny Mills plan is that Leeds United would be best off loaning Callum Wilson from Newcastle United.
It is laughable that Mills is giving this expert analysis and yet isn’t even aware that Callum Wilson is a free agent this summer. Newcastle United announcing Wilson on their released list but still trying to agree a new short-term contract.
Callum Wilson turns 34 during the 2025/26 season and as they have done with a number of other players in their 30s (Burn, Schar etc), Newcastle United will at most be looking to do a maximum of a new one year deal.
Danny Mills talks of Callum Wilson likely wanting a four year deal if signing for Leeds United.
As I say, it is hilarious that Mills doesn’t even know that Wilson is a free agent this summer. Whilst the reality is you would imagine, if Callum Wilson wants the chance of more regular football and doesn’t sign for another year as a Newcastle United squad player, then he would be more than happy to go to a club like Leeds United if they offered a two year contract and that opportunity of getting more time on the pitch (if not injured….).
Callum Wilson actually scored twice the last time he played against Leeds United.
That was at Elland Road in May 2023, the game ending 2-2, as later that month Sam Allardyce and Leeds United were relegated, whilst Eddie Howe and Newcastle United finished fourth and got Champions League football. Incidentally, that brilliant season saw Callum Wilson finish top Premier League scorer for with 18 goals, something a lot of Newcastle fans seem to forget, Almiron next highest with 11 and Alexander Isak scoring 10 PL goals in his first NUFC season.
Danny Mills talking to William Hill Vegas about Leeds United and Callum Wilson:
“The summer transfer window is very difficult for newly-promoted sides from the Championship.
“Leeds will likely be looking at players who are on the fringes of other Premier League squads — those not getting enough game time for whatever reason.
“Leeds could maybe get Callum Wilson on loan for the season.
“He’s a great character and a talented player. He still has some injury issues, but if the club could be confident of getting enough minutes out of him, he’d be a great option.
“The problem is, if he were to consider Leeds, he’d likely want big money and a three- or four-year deal on top of that. That’s the big gamble for Leeds.
“Wilson will not go to Leeds on the condition that, if they get relegated, he’d take a 20 to 30 percent wage reduction. Maybe a loan deal is the more realistic option.
“Wilson is a player I would take, given the chance.
“Leeds are looking for needles in haystacks. These types of players are hard to find because top talent costs £30 to £40 million, plus big wages and long contracts.
