Danny Mills has backed Celtic transfer target Dean Henderson to leave Manchester United on loan in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Leeds and England full-back claimed the 23-year-old will find it difficult to dislodge first-choice keeper David de Gea.

Hoops boss Neil Lennon has had an issue with the goalkeeping position with summer signing Vasilis Barkas replaced by Scott Bain in recent weeks.

Asked by Football Insider whether he expects Henderson to leave United in the winter window, Mills said: “Dean Henderson is probably looking at it now and thinking, maybe I should have stayed at Sheffield United because you have to be playing.

“He’s had a full season in the Premier League and then to come back and to be sat on the bench and it’s quite hard to displace a goalkeeper especially of David de Gea’s stature.

Yes, he’s had one or two wobbles, but he’s not been dropped for that.

“So you think ‘how bad does he have to be for me to get my opportunity?’ He might play a couple of Cup games this season but is that really enough?

“If he can get himself out on loan, possibly with a recall clause, then that would be a great situation.”

Henderson kept 13 clean sheets in 36 Premier League games for the Blades last season as they finished ninth in the table.

He made his England debut earlier this month and currently has just one international cap.
