Portsmouth head coach Danny Cowley has revealed that Reeco Hackett missed yesterday’s clash with AFC Wimbledon due to a foot injury.

The 24-year-old would have been hoping to help his side secure a positive result at the Cherry Red Records Stadium after featuring in each of Pompey’s last seven league fixtures.

However, as a result of this issue, Hackett did not make the trip last night as Cowley utilised Lee Brown in the left wing-back position.

In Hackett’s absence, Portsmouth were forced to settle for a point in their meeting with Wimbledon.

Pompey goalkeeper produced a smart save to prevent Jack Rudoni from scoring in the opening stages of this fixture.

Cowley’s side then went close to breaking the deadlock as Brown’s goal-bound effort was cleared by the Dons.

Following the break, Mahlon Romeo’s effort struck the crossbar whilst Sean Ragggett’s header was saved by Nik Tzanev.

As a result of this 0-0 draw, Pompey closed the gap between them and the play-off places to five points.

After the game, Cowley shared an injury update on Hackett.

Speaking in his post-match press conference (as cited by Hampshire Live) about Hackett, Cowley said: “He got a really nasty stamp on his foot on Saturday [against Milton Keynes Dons], it has ballooned up.

“We’ve X-Rayed it, it was clear, no break.

“It is on his left side, he was never going to play tonight [Tuesday].”

The Pompey boss later added: “We’re hoping it is only short-term, just some bruising and swelling.

“He’s got his foot in a bucket as we speak, hopefully, bucket of ice and get the swelling down.”

The Verdict

For Portsmouth’s sake, they will be desperate for Hackett to make a swift recovery from this particular issue as he has been an important player for the club this season.

In the 21 games that he has played in the third-tier during the current campaign, Hackett has managed to find the back of the net on three occasions and is currently averaging a respectable WhoScored match rating of 6.66 at this level.

Capable of playing in several different positions, the former Bromley man’s versatility could be useful for Pompey as they look to launch a push for a play-off place this year.

In order to avoid the possibility of Hackett suffering another injury setback, Cowley may consider easing him back into action when he is fit enough to feature.
