Danny Buijs sacked by KV Mechelen, Steven Defour takes charge | OneFootball

KV Mechelen have today announced that head coach Danny Buijs has been relieved of first team duties. Speaking on the clubs official website, club CEO Frank Legast said “We really beileved in a long-term partnership, because Danny is a football animal with a lot of football knowledge and strong communication. However, the results did not follow and that is why we are making this decision”.

Steven Defour has taken over the role of head coach at the club, having spent time with the club as a coach. The former Standard Liege, Anderlecht and Burnley midfielder said “I’m really looking forward to it. Becoming a trainer at the club of my heart is of course a dream. I will fully accept the challenge with this group of players”.

Buijs, who took over at KV Mechelen in the summer of 2022, only managed three wins in his 12 matches with KV Mechelen, alongside two draws and seven defeats. Three of those seven defeats have come in the last three matchdays, with defeats against Club Brugge, Anderlecht and Gent. The side only managed one goal in their previous four matches. Defour will take charge of the clubs midweek game against Standard Liege, before facing Eupen at the weekend.
