AS Roma legend Daniele De Rossi has joined Serie B side SPAL as head coach after the club sacked Roberto Venturato. The club announced the deal this afternoon.

SPAL have signed De Rossi, a former Italy international, on a deal till 2024. The club has finalised negotiations with his agent Alessandro Lucci.

It would be De Rossi’s first time leading a club as the head coach. He was part of Roberto Mancini’s coaching staff that helped Italy to win Euro 2020.

With De Rossi signed up to coach SPAL, he would leave his post as technical staff advisor to Mancini.

The 39-year-old is eager to start his professional coaching career after being linked with Bologna, Sampdoria, and Salernitana in the past month.

De Rossi retired from professional football in January 2020. He has never hidden his ambitions to be a coach, but he did not accept any offers claiming that the time was not right.

The combative midfielder should be on the bench for the SPAL’s next game against Cittadella.

SPAL sacked Venturato after the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Frosinone, which left them in 14th place after nine rounds of games.

The Biancazzurri, one of the Serie A hopefuls, have only two wins this season. They have three draws and three defeats. The results are disappointing for a SPAL side seeking immediate return to Serie A.

Club manager Joe Tacopina decided to sack Venturato, and the club has been examining profiles they need to restart their campaign. They have landed on De Rossi.

The alternative to the former AS Roma and Boca Juniors midfielder was Roberto Stellone.

However, Tacopina likes De Rossi and tried to bring him to SPAL before, but the move never materialised. The vacancy on the bench made him try again. This time, he has landed the World Cup winner.
