On the new Rome that is being born… “It is going to be a more technical team, with more quality and which holds the ball more often. I want this team to lose possession less easily and not in the build-up phase.”

“A team with great pace can recover the ball more often, faster. This allows you to be more dominant from the point of view of pace and ball possession. 2+2 doesn’t always make 4; everyone has ideas, it will be a good challenge. Football is going in that direction, we’re looking for physicality mixed with technical quality.”

On Soulé… “In his first year in Serie A he did something incredible, the data shows that he achieved superior numbers compared to his peers, among the strongest in the world, players who play in the most prestigious teams. From the point of view of successful dribbling and key passing, he even surpassed them.”

“It was facilitated by the fact that he played in a team where he was the most important player and coached by a great coach. In my opinion, the small decline is due to age, but also to the decline of the team, which struggled in the second part of the season.”

“When I prepared Frosinone-Roma last year, I told the boys to stay close to Soulé because he is a player who can become a phenomenon, I spoke with Leo himself, and also with his agent, who I have known for many years: he brought Samuel here to Rome. The inclusion was facilitated by the fact that we are a really good group. Both Paredes and Dybala helped him a lot, the Argentines are very family-oriented and support each other.”

“I see him completely integrated into the group, with everyone. He is a boy with a clean face, with the eyes of a true Argentinian; I met many of them there and I saw the hunger they have to play football and become champions. In addition to his quality, he will also show us a lot of desire, which he also demonstrated during the selection phase.”

“Dovbyk? He is a player who has already scored plenty of goals, especially the last year, with a team that wasn’t built to reach that high. He, together with Savio, was the main architect of Girona’s success.”

“He is an important player from a scoring point of view, but also for the depth and space he gives us behind the opposing defence. He can help us remain calm and hold up the ball for the rest of his teammates.”

“Buba Sangare? It was more of a club signing. I didn’t know him well, but they assured me that he was a good player. I watched a video on the fly and said: ‘He will become an important player in the future’. When you work on him, you realize that this future could be even closer; he is a player of incredible quality, with extraordinary explosiveness.”

“He has to work a lot tactically; he is instinctive, he has pure talent, but he will play football with his eyes closed in Serie A. He always has a smile on his face and the desire to play, he has stolen everyone’s hearts.”

“Pellegrini? Every season can be a leap in quality, not only for Lorenzo but for everyone. My career has taught me that even at 30 you can improve and learn something. Honestly, as a fan I accompanied him on his journey with a couple of messages a year, a few calls, but without being too close to him.”

“When I came here in January I met a real man, a real captain, an incredible athlete. In the final 6 months of the past season he put in important performances. Let’s start from there: the end of the season went downhill for everyone, even for him, but it’s also true that I squeezed every last one out of him. This year he’s working great, he’s helping out everyone that’s come into the team.”

“Both him, Mancini and Cristante are doing what I asked them to do last year too, which is to help the young players with mistakes when they go down. I’m satisfied with them, they’re a fundamental part of the dressing room. El Shaarawy, who has a more taciturn character, is also a reference point for others.”
