The race for Bayern Munich star Mathys Tel is heating up with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur going head-to-head to secure his services before the deadline day.
The French forward recently raised eyebrows by informing Bayern of his desire to depart Munich in the final days of the winter window.
The highly-rated forward, who is capable of playing as a left-winger and centre-forward, joined the Bavarians from Rennes in 2022.
However, owing to a number of quality attacking options at the club, the 19-year-old has struggled for regular gametime. Under Vincent Kompany, he has been handed just two starts in the Bundesliga.
Tel clearly doesn’t see his long-term future at the club and recent comments from sporting director Max Eberl have indicated that the German giants are open to parting ways with their teenage talent.
Multiple reports have claimed that Spurs and United are the most interested suitors.
The Mancunians have contacted Bayern to explore the conditions of a potential deal and buy some time. Meanwhile, the North Londoners have already reached an agreement over a permanent transfer with Tel’s club.
However, the exciting prospect is understood to be “waiting” for United, who at the moment are only interested in signing him on loan.
Now, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has seemingly taken matters into his hands to find a breakthrough.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Levy has arrived in Munich today to “accelerate talks” for Tel. Having agreed terms with Bayern, he now intends to hold face-to-face talks with the player and his representatives.
If United really want the Frenchman, they need to act swiftly and decisively. However, it has been suggested that the Red Devils first need to sort out the futures of Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford.
The Argentine is on Napoli and Chelsea’s radar while the England international is keen on moving to Barcelona. However, different financial hurdles are proving to be obstacles in both sagas.
