The Real Madrid men’s player declared to the press that they, as the Spanish men’s team, only focus on “winning and continuing to do our thing.”
This has sparked discussion and controversy in Spain and abroad.
The controversy arose in Spain after a broadcast on television of an interview with world champion Aitana Bonmatí. In that particular interview, the media asked the FC Barcelona player if she expected more support from their male counterparts. She replied with “no” and that they did not expect it before the events occurred.
After the end of the men’s Norway vs Spain fixture, Dani Carvajal was asked about Bonmatí’s comments. The Real Madrid defender didn’t speak a word of support for his fellow professional, but showed a total disinterest in the situation that the Spanish women’s team is going through currently.
The men’s national team have returned to showing they are isolated. This time with the words of Carvajal, but previously with the words of their captains in a mediocre statement. They show that they don’t know where they are or what happens around them.
The Spanish Federation has not lived its best days. Especially since the repugnant act of Luis Rubiales. Everything has been controversial and more polemical, apart from a few exceptions such as Borja Iglesias, Héctor Bellerín and Xabi Alonso, who have all talked about the subject. The other characters of Spanish men’s football, however, have remained silent and ignored what has happened with their colleagues.
Women’s football in Spain gradually started to be taken seriously by the clubs that still today have very ugly details with the players. Most clubs of the Liga F (Spanish Women’s Football League) make them play in their most forgotten fields of their huge sports cities, leaving the main pitches for the lower men’s categories.
There’s a long way to go in the world of women’s football. But in Spain, winning a World Cup has not only made them improve their game — these players are also making a whole society think of why they are not valued equally and treated with dignity. The only thing they want is a place free of harassment and unworthy deals for professional footballers.
