Newcastle wanted revenge for their Carabao Cup defeat against Man United five weeks ago.

Burn said (via Chronicle Live): “It is really special. For a long time, we have always disliked Manchester United. We owed them one this season, so it was good to get the win today.

“As a Newcastle fan, we were desperate to get the win. Over the seasons, this [fixture] has always been one where we want to beat Manchester United.

“It was a great performance from the lads. I am glad to get the win and the clean sheet.”

They got their pound of flesh, dominating Erik ten Hag’s side from start to finish.

Midfielder Joe Willock missed two excellent chances to open the scoring before heading home Allan Saint-Maximin’s looped cross to give his side the lead.

Callum Wilson cemented the win with the second goal, climbing highest to guide home Kieran Trippier’s fantastic cross. The result took the Magpies to third in the league.

United have looked blunt in their recent Premier League fixtures despite advancing in the FA Cup and Europa League.

Manager Erik ten Hag believes Newcastle deserved the victory as they showed more hunger and passion.

Man United can begin to turn things around on Wednesday when Brentford visit Old Trafford. Newcastle travel to London to take on West Ham United.
