Mikkel Damsgaard wrote his name into EURO history last night. The talented midfielder was influential in Denmark’s 4-1 win over Russia to earn a place in the last 16. His right-footed pearler to make it 1-0 to the hosts at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen broke a whole series of records. It was the first goal scored by a player born in 2000 at the EURO, and at the age of 20 years and 353 days, the starlet from Jyllinge became the youngest ever Danish goalscorer in Europe’s premier national-team competition.

Damsgaard also claimed the long-awaited title of the first Sampdoria player to find the net at the EURO in 25 years, with the previous goal long before his birth back in 1996 at Anfield when Enrico Chiesa equalised in Italy’s 2-1 loss against the Czech Republic. This time, however, the final outcome was entirely different.
