Daly, Le Tissier, Buchanan: 5 WSL summer signings who impressed in week one | OneFootball

The new Women’s Super League season is underway and some new signings have made an immediate impact.

This summer, a number of WSL clubs were busy attempting to strengthen their squads and every side has brought in some notable new additions.

A plethora of talented players have arrived from overseas, while some of the league’s established stars have switched their allegiances to different WSL clubs.

The first weekend of this season saw numerous upsets as Aston Villa beat Man City in a seven-goal thriller, while Liverpool stunned defending champions Chelsea.

We’ve picked out five new signings who shone in the first gameweek and are already justifying their price tags.

Maya Le Tissier – Man United

Le Tissier signed for United from Brighton, having been a regular starter for the Seagulls in each of the past two seasons.

The 20-year-old full-back has been touted for greatness and is widely regarded as one of the best young prospects in world football.

While Le Tissier is still waiting for her first senior England cap, she has started life in Manchester superbly –– scoring twice on her debut against Reading as the Red Devils won 4-0.

Kadeisha Buchanan – Chelsea

Buchanan is a three-time Canadian Player of the Year and played a huge role at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as Canada claimed gold.

The centre-back, who won five league titles and five Women’s Champions Leagues with Lyon, joins an array of talented Chelsea defenders, including Millie Bright and Magdalena Eriksson.

Buchanan started against Liverpool and though the Blues suffered a shock defeat, the 26-year-old was impressive nonetheless.

Effortlessly composed in possession, Buchanan regularly shifted into space to help break the Liverpool press and will no doubt be a key player for Emma Hayes’ side this season.

Rachel Daly – Aston Villa

Having been an integral part of England’s Euro 2022 winning side, Daly joined Aston Villa from the Houston Dash in August.

Daly was used as a full-back by Sarina Wiegman for the Lionesses this summer but has proven herself to be just as capable playing further forward.

Indeed, Carla Ward’s decision to play Daly up front was masterful as the 30-year-old scored twice and assisted another.

Emma Koivisto – Liverpool

Liverpool’s recruitment this summer has been smart and Koivisto looks to be an astute bit of business on paper.

Capable of playing defence and midfield, the Finnish star shone for Brighton last year and was mightily impressive on her Liverpool debut against Chelsea.

Drew Spence – Spurs

Spence made more than 200 appearances for Chelsea, and Spurs now have themselves one of the most experienced players in the league.

The midfielder is still only 29 and has signed a two-year contract with the North London club.

Spence made an immediate impact on debut at the weekend –– scoring Spurs’ second goal against Leicester, though she did score an own goal in the second half as well.
