England continued their strong run of form in the Arnold Clark Cup with a resolute victory over Italy, keeping their impressive run against the Europeans alive.

The Lionesses had not lost to the Azzurre since 2012, and even though manager Sarina Wiegman started a heavily-rotated lineup, it was fairly smooth sailing for the hosts.

Lauren Hemp and Alex Greenwood led the way for England, with Rachel Daly and Jess Park also impressing. The opener arrived when Katie Robinson’s cross met the head of the Aston Villa utility tool (played as a defender or striker) for 1-0.

Meanwhile, for Italy, Valentina Giacinti and Barbara Bonansea threatened at the other end but struggled to connect. Ellie Roebuck subsequently had a quiet first half in goal as a result.

However, that would change in the second half as Italy caught England on their heels to draw level controversially. Bonansea’s cross found the head of the substitute Sofia Cantore for 1-1.

The ball fell just on the line, and despite Greenwood clearing it, the goal stood due to no goalline technology.

It wouldn’t take long for the mood to brighten up again for the Lionesses though, as the in-form Daly scored a second header minutes later for the winner. She could have had more too, hitting the woodwork earlier in the game.

England are now unbeaten in 28 games across all competitions and maintain a perfect record in the tournament ahead of the final clash with Belgium on Wednesday.
