Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot is pleased with Tyrell Malacia’s return to first-team training following a long-term knee injury.

Malacia underwent surgery in the summer of 2023, but he suffered multiple setbacks which have delayed his return to competitive action.

The Netherlands international has been involved in some group sessions over the last three weeks, and Dalot is delighted for the left-back.

He told Manutd.com: “It was really tough to see him and the struggle that he’s been through. You can’t imagine how difficult it would be to not be able to do what you love, your job, for such a long time.

“That’s why we celebrated when he came on training with us, even if it was just for the little boxes, to make sure that he feels we are ready to welcome him and to keep helping him, because he’s going to need it.

“At the end of the day, it was a really long time since he got an injury. We’re really pleased to have him. The team needs him and the club needs him, so we are really happy.”

Malacia has not played a competitive game since May last year. With the prolonged break, it is unlikely that he will be rushed back to first-team action.

The 25-year-old could initially feature for the development squad to improve his fitness. Only then could he be considered for the senior side.

The same can be said for Leny Yoro, who has returned to individual training today.

The French wonderkid sustained a foot fracture in pre-season against Arsenal, and it was initially predicted that he could return to action in early November.

However, United will want to handle him with extra caution, and Yoro’s competitive debut could be delayed until after the next international break.

The Red Devils returned to winning ways with a 2-1 home victory over Brentford on Saturday.

They were trailing at the break and made a terrific response to pick up maximum points.

United will now be aiming for their first win of the Europa League campaign when they visit Fenerbahce on Thursday.
