Daley Blind has called on Ajax to go “back to basics” after they fell over the line in a 4-2 win at Volendam on Saturday.
Goals from Dušan Tadić (penalty), Calvin Bassey and Brian Brobbey had the visitors in total control at Kras Stadion, but a late comeback from Volendam almost saw Ajax drop more points.
Indeed de Palingboeren looked to have levelled the game late on only for an offside flag to save Ajax’s blushes.
It took a 96th-minute tap in from Davy Klaassen to finally seal the victory for Alfred Schreuder’s men, but defender Blind admitted afterwards that improvement is needed.
“I think there was nothing going on until 0-3, then we lose control. I think that’s the story,” Blind told ESPN (via Voetbal International).
“I’m not worried, but it’s something we’ve struggled with for the past few weeks. We are not in great shape at the moment.”
Blind felt that they were failing to fulfil their obligations to each other on the pitch.
“You have to keep doing what you have to do, stick to the rules in the team,” he said.
“If you’re not in shape, you have to go back to basics and keep appointments. We have to be critical of that.”
The win moved Ajax to the top of the Eredivisie table, although AZ Alkmaar can go above them again by a point with victory at Utrecht on Sunday.
